BIOLOGICAL Point Detection System

CUSTOMER: General Dynamics ATP
PROJECT: Consulting and Incorporating Process Improvements

Challenge:
General Dynamics Armament and Technical Products (GDATP) was experiencing a chronic problem with a critical machined, finished and assembled part in an identifier for the Joint Biological Point Detection System (JBPDS). The aluminum alloy originally specified for this component had proved susceptible to corrosion, resulting in significant maintenance issues and costs for the company. Other suppliers had been unsuccessful in addressing this issue.

Breakthrough:
WSI researched a number of options for alloys, metal finishing, and installed hardware, and recommended a different grade of aluminum for the part that was widely available at a lower price point.

Results:
The newly specified material eliminated the corrosion problem, saving teardown and maintenance costs for General Dynamics. Use of the new, more widely available alloy also lowered production costs by 10%. Since switching to the new material, WSI has maintained a 100% acceptance rate for these parts.
